The utopia of an European republic. This is not a new idea which results from the actual problems in the confederation. The idea was first mentioned during the French Revolution and was literally pronounced at the French National Assembly in 1872. One task for the EU with the idea of European integration was to overcome national borders. It is a task which couldn’t be fulfilled by the union until today. This is one out of thousand facts that degrades the EU in its current constitutional state as a dystopia. For most of the »citizens of the union« an emotional base to the European flag is missing. This doesn’t result from the fact that people think the European idea was a bad one, but they thought the idea was a big step in the direction of cosmopolitanism. The European ideology can be rescued with a political utopia - the European republic - but the EU, as we know it today, is completely lost.
This work shows an artistic confrontation in form of new flags for an European identity. The designs are based on research on early theories and concepts to the EU. Furthermore, the contextualization was important for this work.
This project includes film, images, prints and an installation handling and was exhibited at Bauhaus-University Weimar in February 2017.
