Franco is a writing system, which uses the latin letterset to write spoken Arabic (which includes interjections from the English language). Franco-Arabic is not really known outside the Arabic world - but it is a real alternative to writing in Arabic. It splits the society - Franco becomes inevitable but is still hushed up. It gets people going, but at the same time, it describes the standstill of a whole culture. Franco-Arabic came with the technical advance in the late 1990s/ early 2000s, was used as a weapon in the Arabic spring, as an expression of displeasure, as an expression of a ruined system. It is the manifestation of a generation which is seeking for its identity. The access to this topic was created by researching the non-academic design of Cairo. The task was to work out the role of typography and designers in this regard.
The project was realized in cooperation with the TH Nuremberg Faculty Design, the German University Cairo, 100 Arabic Poster, and a lot of individuals during a six month stay in Cairo. Besides the research task, other integral parts of the stay were giving workshops at University and working with the people living there.
The result was a collection of essays, interviews, and collected pictures. Furthermore, the work was presented to the public in lectures.
